There’s nothing worse on this side of eternity than death or the inevitability of death. When we lose our family or friends it can leave us in some very dark places with hard questions. How could this happen? Why did they leave me? How could God do this? Now what?
This is exactly what Martha says to Jesus when her brother, Lazarus, dies while waiting on Jesus. “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.” It’s a statement that most every believer probably thinks or says in the same situation. We pray for healing, but sometimes healing doesn’t come. Where was Jesus?
I can’t always explain why Jesus didn’t heal or restore, but I can offer His words in John 11:25-26 in your suffering.
“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies. And everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?
First Jesus assures us that He is the resurrection.
He is able to bring us back from death, both spiritually and physically. We are all dead in our sins and only Jesus can restore us spiritually to a true relationship with God. He also has power over death, physically. He was murdered on the cross to accomplish our spiritual resurrection and three days later He resurrected and physically defeated death.
He promises us that, “Whoever believes in Me(Jesus) will live, even though he dies.” This is our hope as Christians and what we have put our faith into: we who call on the name of Christ will be resurrected in eternity with Jesus, who loves us so. We can have hope and faith that those who die in Christ are reunited with Him in a place where suffering is no more.
Next Jesus promises us that he is the Life.
There is no way to Heaven except through a relationship with Jesus Christ. No religion on the face of the Earth will save you. No politician can unite you with God the Father. No sports team can fulfill the holy purpose that God has given you.
Jesus promises us life abundant while alive and eternal life hereafter. Jesus tells us, “everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die.” The world makes us lots of promises, but nothing can deliver life in eternity outside of Jesus. We believe Jesus’ promise that He is the way to true, unending life.
We can believe as Christians that our loved ones who have passed over into eternity are experiencing the fullness of life that Jesus spoke to Martha about.
Finally He asks this question: Do you believe this?
And that is the question that is presented to you today. Do you believe Him? Do you believe that He is the way, the truth and the life? Do you believe that He is the only way to eternal life? Do you believe that even though we may die, through Jesus we will live again?
Romans 9:10 tells us that we confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord and believe with our hearts that He is resurrected from the dead, then will save us from our sins.
We will be united together again one day with our loved ones in Christ, and what a glorious day that will be.
